First edition by published posthumously by the nephew and successor of the author Thomas Amory (1700-1774). The author Henry Grove (1684-1738) was an English nonconformist minister, theologian and dissenting tutor. The preface and the concluding chapters were contributed by Amory himself. In his preface he informs us that Grove used his manuscript for over thirty years in instructing youth. On his deathbed he charged Amory to ensure its publication. On this important essay on moral philosophy, in which the authors criticise the systems of Grotius, Puffendorf, Hobbes, Berkeley, Clarke, Gibson, Locke, Turnbull, Wollaston, Descartes, etc., see Alan P. F. Sell, « Philosophy, Dissent and Nonconformity, 1689-1920 », J. Clarke, 2004, pp. 61-67). Binding damaged. Some scattered foxing. Good condition inside.
